The Tring Brewery Company was formed in May of 1992, with the first brew and subsequent tasting taking place in November of the same year.
The first beer was a riff on two of the most popular British ales at the time. ‘Ridgeway Bitter’ was born and launched in the home-counties soon thereafter.
In the year 2000 ‘Side Pocket for a Toad’ was created, our now flagship ale that was the brainchild of Andrew Jackson, joining in the same year to sit as director alongside founder Richard Shardlow.
Forever looking to keep a tie with the locale, our range of beers blossomed with titles and images inspired by the home-counties.
Folklore from Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire was used as our portfolio of ales were steadily established as ‘Legendary Beer from Hertfordshire’ – a moniker that we champion to this day.
In 2010 the Tring Brewery Company found its’ new home on Dunsley Farm. Capacity was increased and an expanded brewery shop opened featuring a dedicated self-service tasting bar.
These great cornerstones mark a timeline of production that has seen global recessions, pandemics and more. Though we only look back fondly, the challenges we have faced are a testament to the support that we have received from our local community, who we cannot thank enough for supporting our local independent business.
We’d like to thank discerning local drinkers, Mid-Chilterns CAMRA, South Herts CAMRA and our incredible Golden Toad Club membership that have kept Barry the Brewer busy for countless years.
We’d like to thank the publicans and skilled hospitality workers that have always served Tring Brewery ale in its’ finest form, cellaring our live product until it is the ready to be drawn up to the bar front – the perfect embodiment of fresh cask beer.
We’d like to thank our suppliers such as Simpsons Malt, Crisp Malt, Charles Faram Hops and many more. As a natural product beer is a sum of its’ parts and these ingredients require agricultural passion and expertise long before they arrive in our brewhouse. Thank you for making beer so tasty!
Thank you to all those that wave the flag for artisanal food and drink in the home-counties, we are privileged to be part of such an amazing scene.
Thank you to our charity partners who we have collaborated with and continue to champion today, including but not limited to Rennie Grove Hospice Care, Chiltern MS Centre, Chilterns Dog Rescue Society and Gaddesden Place Riding for Disabled.
Thank you to everyone who has joined us on this incredible ride so far, allowing us to continue our mission of brewing ‘Legendary Beer from Hertfordshire’.
Here’s to thirty years, and more to come!
