Tring Brewery are raising funds for charity by auctioning off an oil painting of their flagship beer ‘Side Pocket for a Toad’ – produced by Guinness-commissioned artist Stephen Charlton.

The one-of-one painting has gone to auction via the brewer’s website, with proceeds donated to the Berkhamsted and District branch of Community First Responders (CFRs) – Tring Brewery’s annual charity of choice.

CFR branches are made up of volunteers who are trained to attend local emergency calls, offering life-saving care in the vital minutes before an ambulance crew arrives. Berkhamsted and District CFRs – who cover Tring, Northchurch, Berkhamsted and smaller surrounding villages – rely on funding from the NHS as well as public donations. Proceeds from Charlton’s painting, listed with a reserve of £500, will be donated to the Berkhamsted and District CFR branch when the auction closes in September.

Set in a black period frame, the oil painting depicts a frothing pint of beer – a subject which has become somewhat of a speciality for its’ creator. Based in Berkhamsted, Charlton is known on social media as ‘the Painter of Pints’; having produced eye-catching beery portraits for some of London’s most famous pubs, along with brewing giants Guinness.

Charlton was named Guinness’ ‘Pint of the Year Commissioned Artist’ in 2025, leading to the launch of his dedicated webshop, a portal that now sprawls with meticulously hand-crafted ‘pint portraits’. Along with pieces for stout brewer Guinness, Stephen’s work can be found at The Toucan in Soho, The Devonshire in Soho and The Porterhouse in Covent Garden.

Jared Ward, Marketing and Events at Tring Brewery, says:

“It’s been a thrill to see Stephen’s painting of our best-selling ale come to life. The brewery team loves the optics of a freshly poured pint, and Stephen’s painting is a spectacular depiction of this – it makes us thirsty just looking at it!

We would like to thank Stephen for his generosity in donating this piece for our charity fundraising efforts – it is a very selfless gesture and one that could help to save lives in the local area. What’s not to love?”

Painter and sculptor Stephen Charlton, comments:

“Capturing the energy of a pint as it descends the glass, has always fascinated me as the light and texture changes as it’s savoured.”

Limited edition prints of Charlton’s work are also available for just £25 from Tring Brewery’s onsite shop, open Monday-Saturday weekly (HP23 6HA).

The charitable auction will close at midday on September 1st 2026 and can be found online at https://app.galabid.com/toad-oil-painting/. The painting measures in at 70cm x 57cm including the frame, and the frame is sold gratis with the piece.

Stephen’s painting is currently on display at The Piggeries Taproom and Courtyard (Tring Brewery’s on-site bar) – open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday weekly. The Piggeries Taproom and Courtyard can be found at Dunsley Farm, London Road, Tring, HP23 6HA.
